What is an AEP?
An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is an Allied Health Professional who use clinical exercise-based interventions with clients who are at risk of developing, or currently experience complex or chronic health conditions and injuries. We can help clients with a range of pathologies including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, pulmonary/respiratory, neurological, metabolic, cancers and mental health. Services provided by AEP’s can be claimable under some national health schemes (i.e. Medicare, Workcover, NDIS, DVA, etc) and even covered by most private health insurers. If you’re keen for more information about this side of things, simply get in touch.
We assist clients with implementing lifestyle changes including physical activity and education so they can improve their functional capacity, strength, mental health, and overall quality of life.
When it comes to prescribing exercise, be it for strength, changing body composition, rehabilitation or general health and wellbeing, Accredited Exercise Physiologists are the most qualified professionals in Australia.
How we differ from Physiotherapists
While the title may sound similar, we do differ from Physiotherapists. Both are Allied Health Professionals who have completed 4-year’s of university studies, but the difference lies in the areas of training and application of our expertise. AEP’s use exercise-based interventions to manage and treat chronic conditions as well as complex pathologies and injuries. We work with the whole person, not just a specific site of injury. AEP’s also use these exercise interventions to educate our clients about short- and long-term lifestyle changes which can help promote self-management for the long term.
Physiotherapists on the other hand, can diagnose a variety of conditions and use therapies, including manual therapy, to reduce pain, restore function and manage chronic conditions.
